About us

A small town Iowa girl walks into a li'l Bar on it's weekly open mic night. as she starts to sing, a bearded man waltzes in hauling an old electric piano. He listens for awhile, and decides he likes what he sees, and definitely likes what he hears. With one last strum on her guitar, She finishes her set, and leaves the stage to him. He steps up, and from the first note he plays, he captivates the crowd and the small town iowa girl. They compliment each other's performances and go their separate ways for the evening. As it turns out, however, this would not be the last time they would meet. Fate brought them together in music and matrimony - this is the story of the schmids.

Marcus schmid, a self-taught piano player from Minneapolis, mn got his start on the trumpet and the drums. But, something beautiful would catch his eye on holiday visits to his grandmother's house - the piano. Coming from a very musical family, he was thoroughly exposed to many different genres including polka, rock 'n' roll, the blues and even some church music which continue to influence his piano playing today. In his early years, he joined his high school jazz band as the first chair trumpet player. After graduating, he went on to follow the Grateful dead, playing in many bands along the way. These days, he enjoys co-leading 'the schmids' with his wife, and tours with the band wookiefoot rocking the keys and the hammond organ.

Sommer schmid is a classically trained singer from Waukee, iA. In her formative years, she took piano lessons, and through that found a true love in singing. She participated in Jazz choir and show choir throught her high school career, all the while taking vocal lessons from a juliard alumn. She then attended McNally Smith College of Music in Saint Paul, which brought her to home away from home, Minnesota. She has performed with bands as a lead singer and as a background vocalist, but her passion lies with 'the schmids'.
